Year 12 Research Project Rohan Chopra's Journal

Week 1 (27/06/2011 - 01/07/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2
This week was mainly an introduction week to the research project. First lesson Mr. Tengdahl handed out some extremely useful paper 'Research Project - Key points'. This handout gave us a really good but brief Idea of what we need to include in our folio, what do we need to hand in as our discussions, outcomes, evaluation and other tasks that are compulsory to meet SACE requirements in order to achieve a good grade for research project. One of the most important things he told us during this week was about the ethics of this research project. We were not allowed to plagiarize anything, we had to reference all the sources we use during this research project with Harvard Author Date referencing, and if we do any survey's all the questions should be crossed check by the teacher and if the survey in a sensitive issue; a consent form should be filled by the person that is going to do the survey. The consent form is . This consent form is approved by Woodville High School and is completely legal to use.
Later this week Mr Tengdahl explained us about the proposal. A task we need to complete in order to start our research. This was due week 2 Monday. In this proposal we were meant to include out research topic, the reason we chose it, capabilities that relate to this research, outline our initial idea for the research, explain the processes of research etc.

Weekend (02/07/2011 - 03/07/2011)
This weekend I planned my proposal as the teacher asked us to do. He said in the first lesson 'If we stick to the timelines he made for us, it shouldn't be hard for us to achieve a good grade for this subject.' I decided to finish the first draft for my proposal on the weekend.
As we can choose a topic of our own choice, this research task should be interesting. I spend most of the Saturday thinking about the topics I would like to research on. An this is a really open ended subjects when comes to choosing a topic. It was extremely hard to choose a topic. I wanted to pick a topic that not many people have heard about or it has not been previously researched in our school. I came up with few ideas about the topics. The list is as following
  • Social Networking.
  • Floods in Japan.
  • Earthquakes in Queensland.
  • Destruction of orangutan habitat.
  • Deforestation of Amazon rainforest.
  • Impacts of British invasion around the world.
From all these topics above I choose 'Impacts of British invasion around the world' but I slightly refined this topic.I changed it to 'Impacts of British invasion on India' as I thought looking around the whole world is a broad topic and to narrow my research in one direction I decided to research on just one country, India.

Draft 1 for the proposal

Research Proposal
My topic for research project that I chose is ‘Impacts of British invasion on India’. There are many reasons why i chose this topic as my research. One of the reasons why I choose to research on this topic is because I am an Australian citizen of Indian heritage and I wish to know the history and gain more knowledge about the country that I was born in. I want to expand my knowledge of the British Empire and its connections with India.
My aim in this research topic would be to find out the impacts of British invasion on India. I want to discover the impacts of British invasion on India and what India faced during this Invasion. I do not have any specific knowledge about this topic or I haven’t researched about this topic before. The only knowledge I have about this topic is that British invasion destroyed the richness of Indian culture, they looted India during that invasion but on the other hand I also know that because of British invasion India was opened to the whole world. People in different countries knew that there is a country called India, while before the invasion not many people knew about India. I want to enhance my knowledge and see the positives and the negatives aspects of this invasion. In year 8, 9 and 10 SOSE I also studied that British people treated most of the Indians extremely brutally. The Indians that were targeted of this physical violence were mainly the people that disagreed to what the British people wanted them to do. I do not have any further knowledge on this topic.
I want to learn about this whole British invasion on India because in many ways I believe I am living away from my culture. Researching about a topic regarding my nationality will certainly bring me close to my culture.
My chosen capabilities for this research are communication and personal development.
I chose communication as one of my capabilities because during this topic I would be communicating with many different kinds of people. This may include communicating via interviews, surveying other people of different ages which will help me to learn to communicate with different ages. I will conduct interviews if needed, which will improve my communication skills as I would have to make question for the interview and be confident while I am conducting an interview.
Another capability is personal development and I chose this because I think this is one of the capabilities that I need to develop and this task will help me develop that capability. While I will be conducting interviews I can develop that as I will built up my confidence of talking to senior people. Another personal development example during this research could be talking to strangers while conducting the surveys. At the moment I do not have confidence to talk to strangers.
Me secondary sources will be people’s analysis, internet books etc.
My primary sources will be interviews, newspaper articles from back then, images etc.
The ethical concerns that I need to be aware of are that I will make sure I am sensitive if interviewing people who were victims of violence or were connected to the British invasion in any way.
I will make sure I do not plagiarize anything, if I use quotes I will reference them. Reference all the images and information I use during this research.
I plan to present my findings as a written document which is 1500 words. I am not certain about this, so this might change as the research progresses.

I also planned some of the questions that i would be researching on. These questions are not certain. Just a rough draft of my questions

‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍Some of the questions that I will be researching are:
‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
  • What does it mean by British invasion on India?
  • What was the time span of this invasion on India?
  • ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍What were the negative impacts of British invasion on India as a nation?
  • ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍What were the positive impacts of British Invasion on India as a nation globally?
  • What were the global benefits India gained during and after this invasion?
  • Why did the British empire invade India? (Question added later on)

Week 2 (04/07/2011 - 08/07/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2
I handed in my proposal to the teacher for feedback on Monday 04/07/2011 as it was due that day. He expected everyone to hand in a draft for the proposal but there weren't many people who met his set deadline.
As very few students finished the drafts, he asked us to present a oral discussion to the class about the proposal (05/07/2011). I was to nervous to go first so Hien Lam decided to do the oral discussion first. I did mine after his and got a fairly positive feedback from the teacher and the class. It was only us two that did this discussion so I was proud of myself as i met his set deadline. Towards the end of this lesson Mr. Tengdahl asked everyone to give him a letter of what we all will be doing during our holidays. He wanted us to plan our work as much as we could in these holidays as it would be easier to start the research if the work is planned and processed.

Today I planned a timeline table for myself, in this table I can reflect my learning and see if i met my set due date for a certain task. Mr. Tengdahl appreciated this idea of reflection and recommended the whole class to follow this. another proud moment for me. I felt really good as my information or table could also help other people if they wish to use it to reflect on their work.
When do I plan to do?
What do I plan to do?
Did I get it done in my set timeline?
Reflection of work.

In this week's double Mr Tengdahl showed the lass some A grade completed research projects that were available on the SACE website for us to view anytime we want to. These folio's gave me a good idea of what is it that the SACE board expects from us and that what is it that we need to do to meet the performance standards for this research. I really appreciate how Mr Tengdahl showed us that what is expected because I believe after looking at that folio, I can try my best to meet the deadlines and all the other requirements for this subject.
Letter
To Mr Tengdahl, 06/07/2011
This letter is in concern with what I would be doing during my holidays. I have certain plans that I would like to finish or at least get started on during holidays. I want to take as much advantage of these holidays as I could because if I finish my set goals during the holidays I would have the whole semester to work on my research, outcome and the evaluation. I want you to go through my questions that I have made and suggest any improvements or alterations that are needed to be made. Your help in deciding a focus question would be really appreciated as it is hard for me to choose a focus question for my research. The questions that I have made are:
  • What does it mean by British invasion on India?
  • What was the time span of this invasion on India?
  • What are the negative impacts of British invasion on India as a nation?
  • What were the positive impacts of British Invasion on India as a nation globally?
  • What were the global benefits India gained during and after this invasion?
  • Why did the British empire invade India? (Question added later on)

Once I get started on researching this questions. I would like to analyze articles to answer my and the questions for the research.
In these holidays I will also categorize some of the websites that I believe would be relevant to this research. I would also like you to go through my proposal and please let me know if it needs any improvements.
Your feedback in regards of this letter would be highly appreciated. Thank you.
Regards,
Rohan Chopra

Economic impact of the British rule in India was really vast. The chief motive of the British to establish political control in India was mainly associated with the exploitation of economic and commercial conditions of the country. They wanted to establish a colonial market in this country for the British goods. British impact on the economic conditions of India was really devastating and harmful. Britain used the most complicated methods to exploit India`s vast rich economic reserves of India. After a control of two hundred years the British completely shattered the economic set up of India. As a result, after the independence, the scenario of the country was that of an economically underdeveloped nation prevailing with hunger, poverty, low national income, etc
Economic Impact of British rule on Agriculture and Land Revenue
Indian agricultures received major attention under the East India Company. It was mainly because of the fact that the chief source of the state income was land revenue. Moreover, the British government mainly wanted to establish their agricultural base in this country. So that the agricultural produces in India could provide cheap raw materials to industries in England. Further, East India Company tried various experiments to maximize the land revenue by resort to the method of oppression and repression to the peasants. The system of farming of land revenue became outdated. Lord Cornwallis introduced `Permanent Settlement` or a system of Land Revenue in Bengal, Bihar and Orissa, in the year 1793, through which the Zamindars gained permanent ownership over the land
Subsequent administrators introduced the Ryotwari system in the Bombay Presidency and most of the parts of the Madras Presidency. The British administrators decided and set the revenue with the farmers directly, which was pretty high in most regions. The Mahalwari system proved extremely devastating in parts of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and some regions of Central India. The Zamindary system encouraged absentee landlordism. It eventually created a host of intermediaries between the state and the cultivator. This complicated system of land revenue created a group of moneylender, who otherwise oppressed the poor peasants by lending them at high interests. The poor cultivators could not repay those high interests and ultimately submitted to those moneylenders. As a result famine was the regular feature of the time. The commercialisation of agriculture had severely affected the rural economy. The existing structure of agriculture was already destabilized, but it was further wrecked by the cultivation of crops and food grains for the market rather than for consumption. This further diminished the economic conditions of the peasants
Economic impact of British rule on Industry
Indian industries suffered massively under the British domination. The superiority and extensive sale of the Indian handicraft in Europe was directed to the commercial interests of the East India Company. The governments in the early years of the 18th century imposed heavy duties on Indian textile imports in Britain. After the Napoleonic wars the Indian markets were made open to the British for free trades. The same British government now permitted British machine made goods to be poured in India duty free or at nominal cost only. The policy of one-way free trade, introduced in India made the Indian handicrafts losing its market. This caused a great misery to a major section of Indian population
The impact of British rule resulted in capitalism and bourgeoisie commerce to attain a flourishing prosperity. The capitalist mode of production and bourgeoisie trends in the commercial transaction destroyed the handicraft industries in the European countries too. The British government also wrecked the Indian cottage industries, which served as one of the major sources of trade. Industries such as pottery, tanning, woollen and silk textile, metal and paper were adversely affected, resulting in weakening of the rural economy. The evil impacts of the industrial revolution in England also affected India. The process of industrial regeneration did not start in India, because of British imperialism. Hence India was subjected in an ongoing economic stagnati
The imperial rulers were far from planning in the industrial developments in India; rather they planned to de-industrialise India. Britain`s chief interest was to constitute India as an agricultural farm for industrialised Britain. However several Indians industries were cropped up from the situation created by the World War I. The economic depression of 1930s suffered from finances disability, which was generally controlled by the British finance and capital. Due to the development of industries like iron and steel, heavy industries, metallurgical etc, traditional industries like textile, cement, jute, paper, sugar, pig iron etc suffered a great dThus, it is quite clear that the sole mission of the European in India was the economic exploitation. The burden of the Europeans was carried on through the economic exploitation in India. The British rulers created new economic structure that solely belonged to the colonial institutions. The British established a colonial economy, colonial society and even colonial ideology. The institution of landlordism infested with narrow political consideration, communalism, regionalism etc were the immediate results of the British economic policy. Moreover `distorted modernization` created new problems. In 1947, India represented a ruined economy, a devastated society and evil effects of neo-colonial
Thus, it can be said that commercialisation of agriculture, increase of agricultural labourers, growth of money lending class, excessive drain of wealth and demolition of handicrafts and cottage industries from the country are some of the major impacts on Indian economy by the British ru

This week I also got feedback on my proposal and Mr. T explained to me how I should Elaborate the plan of my research in my proposal. I plan to do that on my weekend.

One of the most important things I realized this week was that one of my questions is extremely hard to answer.
"What was the time span of this invasion on India?”. I decided to remove this question ( from my research because as I was researching I realized that there isn't much information on this question and also that this question can be answered in 1 or maximum of 2 sentences. Therefore I decided not to include this question in my research .

Refined research questions

Main Question - What were the negative and the positive impacts of British invasion on India, as a nation?
Sub questions under it :-
  • Why did the British empire invade India?
  • What were the global benefits that India gained during and after this invasion?
  • What does it mean by the British invasion on India?

Weekend (30/07/2011 - 31/07/2011)
‍‍‍‍‍
Elaborating the plan of my research in my proposal‍‍‍‍‍

My secondary sources will be books, internet website and people's analysis on the articles regarding this topic. I chose to do this in this order because books are always accurate and having true information as a start to any topic is a strong base to the research. This would lead me to the internet websites in which i can then analyze the articles and see if they relate to the analyses of the articles that I did after reading books. Sometimes internet websites aren't accurate enough because there is no check to it. Most of the times internet websites are blogs, and blogs are people's opinions not facts. Using opinions in my research isn't so great because the information would either be biased or not true. After all this I can have a read through people's analysis on the articles regarding this topic because then I would have an averagely accurate idea if the information in their articles is correct or not as before reading the article i would have some background knowledge already as I would have read books and analyzed internet websites.

My primary sources will be newspaper articles from back then, images and interview's. I decided to look at the newspaper articles and images first because then I would have some background knowledge and I would be more confident in front of an expert who I would be interviewing. I decided to do the interview at the last because then after reading books, analyzing the articles, looking at the internet websites and images I will have a good knowledge of the topic and then I can prepare myself with some interesting questions that I could ask the interviewer. I planned to do it like that because then I wouldn't look like someone who doesn't have any knowledge about their topic when doing an interview and also because these aren't a sign of a good researcher.

Improved Research Proposal
My topic for research project that I chose is ‘Impacts of British invasion of India’.

I planned to do it like that because then I wouldn't look like someone who doesn't have any knowledge about their topic when doing an interview and also because these aren't a sign of a good researcher.
I have reworded and refined these questions couple of times. Evidence of this could be seen in my journal.

Main Question - What were the negative and the positive impacts of British invasion on India, as a nation?
Sub questions under it :-
  • Why did the British empire invade India?

Week 4 (01/08/2011 - 05/08/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2

This week was an extremely busy week. I didn't attend any research project lessons on either Monday or Tuesday as I was on a meeting with Miss. Edwards.
As part of SACE, we watched a video which explained all about the ethics of the research and what is the right thing do do while we do our research. Mr. T said it was compulsory to watch this video so we all had to watch it.
Then Friday this week, we all had to do a task and we all had a question given to us that we had to answer reflecting back on the video and relating it to our research topic.

Weekend (06/08/2011 - 07/08/2011)
Task:
Write a list of measures you will undertake, to ensure all aspects your research will be ethical.
BASE THIS ON YOUR PROJECT
To ensure my research is ethical:
  • I will not plagiarism anything.
  • Make sure I reference every source, image or any article I use.
  • My questions that I ask other people shouldn't be biased or harming the interviewer in anyway. For eg: If i interview someone old and they have connections with this invasion via the army or have lost someone in the war related to India and British Empire.
  • If interviewing an Indian, I will try to not bring back their bad memories if they had any.
  • Survey appropriate people and not have any racial questions in my survey.
  • As being an Indian, I shall not be biased to Indians and ignore the British people.
  • Put down positive and negative points from both the countries.
These are all the ethical concerns I have at the moment.

Week 5 (08/08/2011 - 12/08/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2

This week has been a very busy week. Everyone works independently now and we all just analyze articles so we can answer our focus question in our outcome.
Towards the end of this week, we were all told that we have to present a 5 minutes oral presentation on all our findings so far. I believe this task shouldn't be hard because i think i would be able to present a 5 min talk on my research so far. My aim for this week is to analyze two articles on the weekend.

Weekend (13/08/2011 - 14/08/2011)
I had started analyzing and due to my sickness I was only able to finish analyzing one article but I should be able to finish analyzing the other article soon as well.
The analyzed article -

Week 6 (15/08/2011 - 19/08/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2

This week I have planned to make a survey or interview questions regarding my topic. Making this survey is consuming more time then I thought it would. I have to be really careful with all the questions I ask in the survey or Interview as they shouldn't be racist or biased. Also, I will point out what Britisher's did and how they invaded India. I am planning to ask some questions but also give a 3 line Introduction about my topic at the start of the survey. I am doing this because I do not expect everyone to know about my topic. I also want to survey mature audience. There is no point in surveying little children as I highly doubt they would have any sort of knowledge about my topic. My aim for the weekend is to make a rough draft for my survey so I can show Mr. T the draft and get his opinions on it. My another aim this weekend would be to finish analyzing an article.

Weekend (20/08/2011 - 21/08/2011)

First goal of the weekend -
Rough draft of the survey
When Britisher’s first came to India, they requested to have a business setup in India because India was rich in spices and was known as a golden sparrow of that era. Britisher’s wanted to awhale that opportunity to setup a business in India.

What is your age?

What is your nationality?

Have you heard about British Invasion on India before? If not, thank you for your participation in this survey.

Do you think that British invasion on India was right or wrong?

Do you think the Britisher’s played the right role while they were in India?

If the above question was a YES, could you please state some of the right roles played by the Britisher’s.

Do you know anything about the revolution of 1857 when the British Empire was in India?

If yes, in brief please describe what do you know about this revolution?

When Britisher’s came to India, they came for the business. Do you think they should have stayed there for business rather than Invading India?

What are your opinions on the British Invasion on India?

Week 7 (22/08/2011 - 26/08/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2

One of my main aims this week is to get my survey going and to update my timeline table for Research project.‍‍ I really want to keep this table updating to reflect back on my goals that I had made for myself.‍‍

IMPORTANT

I showed my questions to the teacher and he suggested that my questions are better questions for an interview not survey. So now I have changed plans and for the time being i won't be doing any survey's rather i would be conducting interviews. I will be asking same questions to different professor's of university or teachers from school, I would be asking same questions because then I can get different answer's from same questions and then I believe it would easier for me to analyze on the interview answer's.
Today i have emailed 3 different professor's of Adelaide University. I will be waiting for their reply and until then I will just carry on with my research.

Today we were given the worst news possible from our teacher. As Mr. T though our research project would be due late in term 4 but with the latest updates, our final folio is due term 4 week 1. This gives us very less time to get our work done on time. Now that we have at least 5 less weeks then we expected, I need to speed up with my research and produce my outcome as soon as possible so I can start writing my evaluation.
On 23/08/2011 - I had an email back From Professor Clement, one of the professor's that I emailed. She said she was unable to assist me in that area as she was not the expert in the topic I have chosen for my research. She forwarded my emails to other historians in Adelaide University so hopefully I will get a email back.

I had another email back saying they are unable to help me as they aren't expert in this area.It is really hard t find an expert interviewer to ask questions regarding my topic.

Weekend (27/08/2011 - 28/08/2011)

I plan to analyze more articles during this weekend and I would really like to start my outcome as soon as possible and to do so I shall finish analyzing articles as soon as possible. In the coming week, I also plan to go to the city of Charles Sturt Woodville library to find some good books on my topic.

Week 8 (29/08/2011 - 02/09/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2

This week I went to various local libraries in search of some information on my topic. I was unable to find any information. They had books on world wars and topics like global history but not specifically on British invasion of India. Some books that I found on Indian history were not related to my topic question. Now I decided to find a video for a positive effect of British invasion as I need more sources to support my research.
I found a Video of a Indians citizen talking about the positives in India because of the British Invasion of India.

Weekend (03/09/2011 - 04/09/2011)
I have finished analyzing all the articles I had, and now I am starting off with my outcome.

Week 9 (05/09/2011 - 09/09/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2
As I was doing my outcome, I came across a historian, Mr. Alan Roberts. I was talking to him about my research topic and he decided to give me some expert advice on some of my questions. i have emailed him my questions which are:
Do you think that British invasion on India was right or wrong?

Do you think the Britisher’s played the right role while they were in India?

If the above question was a YES, could you please state some of the right roles played by the Britisher’s.

Do you know anything about the revolution of 1857 when the British Empire was in India?

When Britisher’s came to India, they came for the business. Do you think they should have stayed there for business rather than Invading India?

What were the negative and positive effects of this invasion?

What are your opinions on the British Invasion on India?

Now i am in process of writing my outcome while waiting for Mr. Alan Robert's reply to my email.
This week we were told a really horrible news that we have to finish our research project this year or if w take it to the next year we have to start off with a new topic. This was a disaster news for everyone.

Weekend (10/09/2011 - 11/09/2011)
This weekend i didn't do much of a research homework as I was busy with other subjects.

Week 10 (12/09/2011 - 16/09/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2
I missed nearly all research lessons for this week because I was helping Miss. Edwards with the braiding project.

Weekend (17/09/2011 - 19/09/2011)
"What was the time span of this invasion on India?”.
I just continued with my research outcome.

Week 11 (20/09/2011 - 24/09/2011) (Term 3) - Semester 2
